Why I built a night mode for Google Docs

As a hobbyist writer, I've enjoyed working on my first project within Google Docs - it's free, powerful, and easy to use on all my devices.

However, I often find that I can only write in the evenings or late at night. Using gDocs on the desktop, that means dealing with a bright glare, as there is no built-in "dark mode". I've decided to fix that by creating my own extension to make writing easier on the eyes.

Enter Lamplighter - a free extension that adds a dark mode in a few different color combinations.

I also added a few tools that other writers may enjoy, including a word count in the corner, a typewriter mode, a word count of any text you copy and how long it would take to read aloud.

This is a free and private extension. There are no accounts or servers to deal with.

I'd love to hear feedback or bug reports.

Special thanks to Hugh Howey, the writer behind the Silo Series and the excellent writing app Neo, for providing the design inspiration for this extension.

Happy writing.

Lamplighter is coming to the Chrome Web Store in November.
